Should domestic abuse get more attention?

By Charles Glover, Jr.

I believe that the current US system in place for dealing with domestic violence is broken and needs to be fixed. It is a complex and at times difficult to address domestic violence, but our country goes overboard to address issues it deems serious. Can we honestly say our country is doing the best it can to combat domestic violence?

Unites States Attorney General Loretta Lynch has been vocal about putting an end to domestic violence.

Unites States Attorney General Loretta Lynch has been vocal about putting an end to domestic violence.

The United States Department of Justice defines domestic violence as “a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.”

The expansive definition of domestic violence should help illustrate the complexity of coping with such a widespread issue. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the concerns regarding the system currently in place to deal with domestic violence seem to be rising.

New York Giants kicker Josh Brown, who was suspended 1 game to begin the season for domestic violence, is having his case reexamined by the NFL after more information surfaced regarding domestic violence against his now ex-wife.

Another NFL player, this time New York Giants kicker Josh Brown, is in the headlines following the release of reports of domestic violence claims from his now ex-wife. The NBA regular season will start in a few days, but Sacramento Kings guard Darren Collison will not be available for the first 8 games as he serves his suspension for domestic violence against his girlfriend. And as excited as Chicago Cubs fans are to be in the World Series, it is possible the last outs of the series could be recorded by their closer Aroldis Chapman, who began this season serving a 30-game suspension for allegations of domestic violence against his girlfriend.

These athletes garner extra scrutiny for their acts of domestic violence but the issue itself is unfortunately still viewed as a task too large to handle. While the question on many people’s minds is how do we put an end to domestic violence, the greater question is why don’t we treat domestic violence the way we treat child abuse and neglect?

Attorneys and law enforcement officials often assert that their greatest challenge in prosecuting alleged perpetrators of domestic violence is lack of evidence or cooperation from the alleged victims. This is an understandable roadblock, however what is incomprehensible is that the federal or state government has not found a way to circumvent this obstacle. We have countless examples in this country of people finding a way to address serious concerns.

Mary Ellen McCormack, showing visible scars of abuse at age 10 in this picture, was the nation's first widely recognized case of child abuse.

Mary Ellen McCormack, showing visible scars of abuse at age 10 in this picture, was the nation’s first widely recognized case of child abuse.

Take for example the case of Mary Ellen McCormack. Mary Ellen was born in 1864 in New York City, but due to her father’s death and mother’s inability to care for her, became a foster child at the age of two. Her foster-mother Mary Connolly, was eventually investigated and convicted for abuse of Mary Ellen which included daily beatings, malnutrition and numerous malicious and neglectful actions. This landmark case in 1874 for child abuse was largely made possible because of laws that existed against the inhumane treatment of animals. That’s correct.

Henry Bergh and Elbridge Thomas Gerry of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) helped ensure that Mary Ellen was removed from her foster home before the trial and handled her legal case as well. After having success with the case, and having formed the ASPCA in 1866, they helped form the first child abuse and neglect agency in the country, the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC).

This story highlights the struggles America has had in providing systemic protection for those in need in our country. The formation of the NYSPCC in 1874 was a positive step for beginning to deal with child abuse but it would take another century for the federal government to enact legislation on the issue with the passing of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act in 1974.

There is no disputing the difficulties associated with trying to help people dealing with domestic violence but there needs to be greater urgency in the matter. For those brave enough to seek help, they are faced with limited options. A restraining order is not accompanied by around the clock police surveillance or protection. Shelters and hotlines are helpful but they require the victims to assume all of the initial risk in seeking assistance.

image

There should be a statewide agency for domestic violence that is modeled after each state’s child protective services to allow the community to be better equipped to assist those in need. These agencies should investigate, monitor, and take action against allegations of domestic violence in the same manner they are supposed to for child abuse. It is clear the criminal justice system alone is ill-equipped to make the strides necessary to drastically reduce domestic violence. The time has come to move past creating awareness and start creating solutions.–OnPointPress.net–

Notable takeaways from the 2014 NFL draft

Teddy Bridgewater seems to the quarterback of the future for the Minnesota Vikings.

Teddy Bridgewater seems to the quarterback of the future for the Minnesota Vikings.

By Charles Glover, Jr.

The National Football League (NFL) completed its amateur draft on Saturday, giving 256 young men an opportunity to live out their dream of playing professional football. While Johnny Manziel and Michael Sam have received the bulk of the recognition from this draft, there were a few other players that seem to be in a great position to make their General Managers look good. The Heisman finalists, in particular, did well.

Quarterbacks

Quarterbacks are widely regarded as the most important position in the NFL and there were a few that were drafted that seem to be in excellent positions to contribute to their teams.

Teddy Bridgewater inspires hope for the Minnesota Vikings’ future.

Teddy Bridgewater – Bridgewater was selected 32nd overall with the last pick of the first round. The Vikings traded up to take a player that was rumored to go near the top of the draft. The Vikings plan to ease Bridgewater into the mix and he may not play this season. However, Bridgewater seems to be the quarterback in the best position for long-term success.

Derek Carr might be the first of the drafted quarterbacks to take the field this season.

Derek Carr might be the first of the drafted quarterbacks to take the field this season.

Derek Carr – Carr was drafted 36th overall by the Oakland Raiders and is not going to a team full of offensive talent. However, the Raiders do not have a great deal invested in incumbent starting quarterback Matt Schaub. The Raiders have focused on improving their defense so when Carr is eventually the starter, there can be a balanced team waiting for him.

tom

Tom Savage is not expected to make much of a difference to the Houston Texans this season.

Tom Savage – Savage was drafted in the 4th round by the Houston Texans but will not be expected to contribute to the team this season. The Texans will hope that they can develop Savage into the long-term starter to replace the turnover- prone Schaub from last season.

The 2014 Heisman finalists were heavily represented in this year's draft. (l - r) Jordan Lynch, Johnny Manziel, Tre Mason, AJ McCarron, Andre Williams, and Jameis Winston. Winston was not eligible for the draft but is expected to be taken high next year.

2014 Heisman Candidates

Five of the six 2014 Heisman candidates were eligible for this year’s draft and 4 of them were drafted. QB Jordan Lynch signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears.

tre

Tre Mason was drafted early in the 3rd round by the St. Louis Rams.

Tre Mason – Mason was drafted early in the 3rd round by the St. Louis Rams to be a backup running back. Mason had an exciting career as a running back and returner at Auburn and the Rams are hoping to be able to add depth to an important position in the Rams game plan.

Running back Andre Williams will have a chance to help the Giants this season if he proves himself during the offseason.

Running back Andre Williams, who boasts Jamaican heritage, will have a chance to help the Giants this season if he proves himself during the offseason.

Andre Williams – Williams was selected in the 4th round by the New York Giants. Williams is in the best position to contribute next season as there is less defined depth at running back for the Giants.

The Giants will hope that Williams can help provide some balance to their pass heavy offense.

Andre Williams transitions from Boston College to the New York Giants, trading in one big city for another.

Johnny Manziel – Manziel was selected 22nd by the Cleveland Browns. There are many questions as to whether Manziel’s improvisational style at quarterback will transition well to the NFL. The Browns have made it clear that they believe in Manziel, as their backup quarterback, for now.

AJ McCarron – McCarron was drafted in the 5th round by the Cincinnati Bengals to likely be a backup quarterback. The Bengals’ current starter Andy Dalton has shown improvement in the regular season but has yet to lead his team to a playoff victory. The Bengals are hoping McCarron’s collegiate playoff experience will be a benefit to their team.

Michael Sam

Michael Sam became the first openly gay player selected in the NFL draft. He is headed to the St. Louis Rams to join Heisman finalist Tre Mason.

NFL coordinators need Rooney Rule too

There are currently five minority head coaches in the National Football League (NFL): Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati Bengals), Lovie Smith (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Ron Rivera (Carolina Panthers), Jim Caldwell (Detroit Lions), and Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers). There are five minority general managers: Ozzie Newsome (Baltimore Ravens), Reggie McKenzie (Oakland Raiders), Martin Mayhew (Detroit Lions), Rick Smith (Houston Texans), and Jerry Reese (New York Giants). There are 32 NFL teams so there is clearly need for better minority representation at the coaching, coordinator, general manager and ownership levels . Extending the Rooney Rule to address this under-representation, seems to be the only solution to change the status quo.

The  Rooney Rule, named after the chairman of the NFL diversity committee and Steelers owner Dan Rooney, was instituted to give minority candidates more chances in positions of power. The NFL hiring pool for head coaching positions generally comes from current or recent NFL coordinators. As the Associated Press recently reported, “The Fritz Pollard Alliance, a group of minority coaches and front-office, scouting and game-day NFL officials, wants the Rooney Rule expanded to apply to coordinators, assistant head coaches and club president positions.”

Mike Tomlin has led the Pittsburgh Steelers to two Super Bowl appearances, winning Super Bowl 43.

The challenge for minority candidates now is that most of they mainly come from the defensive side of the game. As the NFL continues to make rule changes to accentuate offense, defensive coaches are increasingly challenged to prove their worth in a league with continual rising scoring. This past season, NFL teams combined to score an average 23.4 points per game, the highest league average of all time. As offensive coaches continue to be rewarded, defensive coaches find themselves left behind and  having to constantly prove themselves, which is odd, since strong defense typically wins games as the Seattle Seahawks convincingly demonstrated in Sunday’s Super Bowl blowout.

Newly hired Detroit Lions head coach, Jim Caldwell, was the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens last season.

The extension of the Rooney Rule to coordinator positions will allow for more diversity in coordinator positions on both offense and defense. Michael Silver of Yahoo Sports recently surmised, “offensive coordinators tend to get the call to be head coach, and the guys overseeing quarterbacks… tend to get [Offensive Coordinator] OC jobs.” Of the current minority head coaches, only Jim Caldwell has expertise on offense. His hiring this off-season was lauded as a positive step for minority candidates as the Lions were viewed as a desirable destination. Extending the Rooney Rule to coordinator positions will likely give more minority candidates a chance to show that their knowledge of offense is as strong as their accepted knowledge of defense. That should increase the ranks of minority coaches in the NFL, a change that is long overdue.–OnPointPress.net–

Front offices dictate the future of sports franchises

By Charles Glover, Jr.

The role of front offices in determining the operations of sports teams is usually specific and clear. Upper management provides the structure and leadership that guides teams to the ultimate goal of winning championships. With the NFL season opening today, sports fans looking for winning predictions on the season need to look no further than the front offices in order to effectively evaluate each team.

The Falcons and Seahawks are early favorites to exceed their success from last season and make it to the Superbowl

The Falcons and Seahawks are early favorites to exceed their success from last season and make it to the Super Bowl

Since the 2000-01 seasons, there have been eleven different NFC Super Bowl participants and five different AFC Super Bowl participants. The AFC has been victorious eight times compared to the NFC’s five victories. Four franchises (New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and Baltimore Ravens) are responsible for nine Super Bowl wins and thirteen Super Bowl appearances. There are numerous factors that have led to those teams having the consistent levels of success, the most common thread being excellent front offices.

Denver fans hope Manning is successful in leading his team to the Superbowl this season.

Denver fans hope Manning is successful in leading his team to the Super Bowl this season.

According to Las Vegas bookies, the teams with the best odds of winning the Super Bowl this upcoming season are, in order, the Denver Broncos, San Fransisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, and Atlanta Falcons. Last year’s Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens have been given the thirteenth best chance to win it all. The Las Vegas odds are a combination of the season’s predictions and the betting public’s favorite teams. The teams on this list have been successful over the past few seasons which are why most pundits expect them to continue their success.  The beauty of sports is the passion of the fans and the hope that this is the year that your favorite team will win it all.

The best thing a franchise can give its fan base is the hope that this year will be the year they win it all. This year there are several team fan bases with legitimate hope and confidence in their teams. Coincidentally, these are most of the same teams that have been successful since the new millennium. There is no secret to their success.

The Patriots and Giants are among the NFL elite that have numerous questions entering this season.

The Patriots and Giants are among the NFL elite that have numerous questions swirling around them as they enter this season.

The best organizations have smart owners who invest in the team’s structure financially, and delegate to the proper people to make football decisions. The ideal general managers evaluate talent well, build a well-rounded team and hire the right coaches. The best coaches motivate, teach, and put their players in the best position to win.

Jets fans are likely in for another long season.

Jets fans are likely in for another long season as uncertainty and dysfunction cloud their daily operations.

Oftentimes, players get the most attention and credit for the teams’ success and the greatest blame for the teams’ failures. While fans will scream for their quarterback to be changed or their head coach to be fired, the attention needs to go squarely to the front offices of those troubled teams. Fans of consistently moribund teams prepare you for more of the same.

There are certain trends that are likely to repeat this season in the NFL. It is likely that a current quarterback that has already taken his team to the Super Bowl will return to the big game. It is also likely that most of the teams that made the playoffs last year will make it again this year. In the end, the best predictor of future success is past performance as well as the dedication and structure established by the front offices.-OnPointPress.net
